Who it is for
One toddler who walks steadily on their own, and one adult. This one is not for children who are still cruising or have only just started walking.
Toddlers who have been walking confidently for a while are a suggested starting point. If your child still falls often when carrying things, wait. The sitting-down games are just as good.
What you need
- A small, light cushion or a folded hand towel that your toddler can hold flat in two hands.
- One small stuffed animal or a rolled pair of adult socks to ride on top.
- A soft landing spot for the end: a pillow or a laundry basket lined with a towel.
Space and surface
A carpeted path about five toddler steps long, completely clear: no toys, rug edges, cords, or furniture corners. Bare feet or grip socks. Never near stairs.
Set it up
- Walk the path yourself and pick up everything on it.
- Put the landing spot at one end and sit beside it.
- Have your toddler stand at the other end. Stay close enough that you can reach them in one move.
- Put the cushion flat in their two hands.
- Set the stuffed animal on the middle of the cushion and say: “Bring it to me, on top.”
How to play
- Your toddler walks toward you carrying the cushion with the animal on it.
- If the animal falls off, they stop. You put it back on, or they do.
- No running. If they speed up, move closer and shorten the trip.
- At the end, they tip the animal onto the landing spot.
- Cheer for the delivery, whether it arrived on top or was carried the last part by hand.
How it ends
One delivery is a complete game. Do it again only if they bring the cushion back to the start themselves.
Make it easier or harder
Easier
- Two steps instead of five.
- Use a folded towel with the animal sitting in the fold, so it cannot slide.
- Walk beside them with one hand hovering under the cushion.
Harder
- A slightly longer path.
- Rolled socks instead of a stuffed animal.
- A gentle turn in the path, marked with a strip of painter’s tape on the carpet.
Indoors and outdoors
Keep this one indoors on carpet. Grass hides dips, and paving is hard to fall on.
Mixed ages and different abilities
- An older child can be the receiver at the landing spot, sitting down, arms out.
- Older siblings carry their own cushion on a separate path, one child moving at a time.
- A child who is not walking can push the cushion along the floor with the animal riding on it.
- A child using a walker or holding your hands can deliver the animal balanced on the walker tray or on your flat palm.
- Crawling with the animal on their back, with you steadying it, is a good version too.
When it goes wrong, and how to reset
The common wobble is looking at you instead of at the cushion, and the animal sliding off. Say “Look at it,” once, gently. If it keeps falling, shorten the trip to two steps and let that be enough.
Safety notes for this game
- Confident walkers only, on carpet, with a clear path. This is the one toddler game here where a fall is possible, so set it up carefully or skip it.
- Never near stairs, a fireplace, a glass door, or hard furniture edges.
- The carried things are soft and light. Nothing hard, heavy, or breakable is ever carried.
- One child moving at a time.
- The cushion must be small enough that your toddler can see their own feet over it.
- An adult stays close enough to reach the child in one move, the whole time.
