Who it is for
One toddler and one adult, sitting together on the floor. The adult stays within arm’s reach for the whole game and handles nothing but the setup.
Toddlers who can sit steadily and pick something up with two hands are a suggested starting point. You know your child: if they would rather mouth the object than place it, that is the game for today.
What you need
- A base: one firm sofa cushion laid flat on the floor, or a shoebox with the lid taped shut.
- One thing to put on top: a small stuffed animal, a rolled pair of adult socks, or a folded washcloth.
- Nothing else. One base and one object is the whole game.
Space and surface
A carpet, rug, or play mat with about one arm’s length of clear floor all around. Move the coffee table corner, the pet bowl, and anything with a cord out of reach first.
Set it up
- Sit on the floor and put the base between you and your toddler, close enough that they do not have to lean.
- Check the object: soft, light, bigger than their fist, nothing sewn on that could come off.
- Hold the object in both hands where they can see it.
- Put it on the middle of the base, slowly, and take your hands away. Say what happened: “On top.”
- Take it off and offer it to them.
How to play
- Your toddler puts the object on the base, any way they like.
- Wait. Count three slow breaths before you say or do anything.
- If it stays, say so: “It stayed on top.”
- If it slides off, say that too, in the same warm voice: “It slid off.” Then hand it back.
- Take it off together and go again for as long as they want to.
How it ends
It ends when your toddler turns away, crawls off, or starts doing something else with the object. That is a finished game, not a failed one. There is no number of tries to reach.
Make it easier or harder
Easier
- Use a bigger, flatter object, such as a folded towel.
- Hold the base still with one hand while they place.
- Put your hands under theirs and place it together once, then let go.
Harder
- Offer a second object and let them choose which one goes on top.
- Use the shoebox instead of the cushion: it is a smaller place to aim for.
- Ask where else it could go on top. The base can change.
Indoors and outdoors
This is an indoor floor game. Outside, a picnic blanket on flat, dry grass in the shade works the same way. Skip it on hard paving.
Mixed ages and different abilities
- An older sibling can be the one who hands the object back. Give them that job by name so they do not take over the placing.
- If sitting unsupported is hard, your toddler can sit in your lap facing the base.
- If gripping is hard, use a rolled washcloth: it is easy to hold and easy to let go of.
- Placing with one hand, two hands, or with your help all count.
When it goes wrong, and how to reset
The common wobble is the adult: fixing the object before the toddler has finished looking at it. If it lands on the edge and falls, let it fall. Hand it back and say nothing more than what happened.
Safety notes for this game
- Every piece is bigger than your toddler’s closed fist, with nothing that can come off it. If you are unsure about a piece, leave it out.
- Soft things only. No hard, heavy, or breakable objects, and nothing filled with loose beads, beans, or pellets.
- No plastic bags, balloons, cords, ribbons, or strings anywhere in the play space.
- The base stays on the floor. Never on a sofa, bed, chair, or table.
- An adult is within arm’s reach the whole time. If you need to leave the room, the game pauses and your toddler comes with you.
- Everything will go in the mouth. Use only things you would be comfortable with them mouthing, and wash them afterward.
